Today marks the end of the photo-a-day challenge for November, a challenge I participated in through 2Peas in a Bucket. I can't emphasize enough how much this virtual place has influenced me. I used to roll my eyes (to myself) when I'd hear about "friends" people made on the internet, and I apologize for that now. I've made some really good friends (no quotations) here, and I've learned some pretty amazing things about an artform I've been destined for since I was about three years old. I never really fit in during my art classes in high school, because I'm not really very good at drawing or painting. Truth be told, I've learned more from 2Peas about principles of design, use of color, and technique than I learned in any of those art classes.
When I signed on to do the photo-a-day challenge, I thought it would be easy. I take a LOT of pictures... almost 7000 since I purchased my digital camera in March 2004. Taking a photo every single day is different, though. It requires an awareness of subject matter, light, and luck that I don't normally think about much on a regular basis. Normally, when I pull out my camera it's because all those things are present in front of me—no searching around for them. This was different, because I had to do a lot more looking. I'm proud of myself for not cheating on the photos I used: each one of them was taken the day noted. I even kind of like the photo of the floor cleaner I took out of desperation at 10:00 pm, just so I'd end up with something to use that day : )
