Today I picked up Maddie from school and took her to work with me at the Pentagon. I arrived at the school and marched directly to the Main Office (as all of the signs told me I must do), signed the log book, submitted my credentials, and waited for Maddie to appear. She was escorted by a teacher's aide, who requested I come back to the classroom to say hello to the kids. To my surprise, the children sang two of their favorite kindergarten songs for me. Anyway, Maddie and I had a lovely time at the Pentagon, where they had all sorts of activities for the kids in the center courtyard (thanks to MOAA) and we had a nice lunch at the 2nd floor, 7th corridor McDonald's. Maddie was the first in our family to see my cramped desk space in the windowless vault where I work. She was charming and engaged in spirited conversation with everyone in the office. Maddie is as delightful a daughter as all of E's pictures and stories suggest and our day together was great fun.

Maddie had a loose tooth for about two months. Actually, it wasn't quite two months, but after she burst into tears when I told her I didn't think her tooth was actually loose yet, I decided not to quibble about it anymore.
She has been extremely proud of her loose tooth.
And extremely neurotic about it, too.
For example, last week her teacher called me at home at about 12:30 and prefaced the call by saying "Madeline's OK!" but that I probably better come get her at school because of her loose tooth. Oh, sweetie. You have twenty teeth in your mouth, and mama isn't coming to pick you up at school each time one of them wiggles a little too far and freaks you out. But I came and got her, which was probably a good thing, because she was in I-am-not-bawling-but-if-you-look-at-me-I-might-start mode, which is a difficult place to be when surrounded with people. She spent most of the afternoon holed up in her room with Ramona the Brave.
Almost a week later, the tooth was still there, barely.
And then disaster struck: on Thursday night, enjoying a bedtime snack of cereal, Maddie swallowed that loose tooth. She didn't notice until she was all finished with her cereal. The look on her face and the ensuing wails were alternately heart-breaking and giggle-inducing. Matt and I behaved ourselves, however, and reassured her that she was not the first kid to swallow a tooth (were we right? We can't think of a single person who has ever swallowed a loose tooth) and that the tooth fairy would no doubt find her anyway. Are we not the primary location of fairy houses in northern Virginia?
She is $5 richer (though that's only the first tooth going-rate in the Dillow house—she'll surely be getting 25¢, maybe the occasional gold dollar from now on) and well on her way to big kid-dom. Sniff.
But these will do just fine. WE'RE GOING TO SEE BEN FOLDS!!! This makes up for forgetting to wish each other happy anniversary last year.
Would it be too nerdy to make a paper chain so I can count down the days until May 28?

Matt got free tickets to the Nationals game last night at the last minute and offered them to Jill and me first : ) It pays to live two Metro stops/transfer/two more Metro stops from the ballpark, because we only missed the first inning.
Final Score: Marlins (blech) 4, Nationals 3 (It was easy to root for the Nationals last night!)
When I grab two Kleenex to smash an ant that has decided to crawl in my house through a mysterious portal I cannot find no matter what I do and I check to see that it is, in fact, smashed and it jumps out of the Kleenex onto my arm
