24/52 | Maddie's Pencil Case

On the giant standardized school supply list for 3rd graders, a zippered pencil pouch was listed as one of the items she is expected to show up with on the first day of school.

It is not easy to find a zippered pencil pouch in this town, I've decided. Walmart probably has 3700 to choose from, but I would rather do about 3700 other things besides enter Walmart during school supply shopping season. So, I decided to make her one!

The first one was pretty much a disaster. (There is a theme to my sewing projects this year: the first and possibly the second version of any given item will be a total flop.) We stopped at Hobby Lobby this morning after our 2.5 hour dentist appointment for four and I let her choose her own fabric for the second attempt.

The second attempt turned out quite well! Please note that I attempted to teach myself how to sew in a zipper. It looks fine here, but I'm certain I didn't do it right because I jammed my machine with the needle somehow about 7 times. This has never happened before, so I'm blaming something about the zipper foot or the zipper itself. Weird.

Maddie was thrilled, and she'll be able to store her nerdy pencil collection in it during the off-season : ) (Says the mama with the nerdy free library bookmark collection)
